Sumitomo was the richest man in Japan in 1922. Kuhara and Fujita both came in second place, as they had the same amount of money. Kuhara started relatively simply as a merchant's son, but was very smart, and quickly rose in the ranks of industry and made a lot of money. He was very free with his money, building many schools, giving gifts, living well. After World War 2, he was not allowed to work for 7 years. He also spent a lot of his money on politics. From the late 50's Kuhara lived in a 2500 sq. foot house at Shirokane - Tokyo. He had just enough money to live out the rest of his life and his wife Tamako's life. Though comparatively modest, he still had 4 servants, a garden, and 3 other homes on the property. When he was doing well, I counted 7 estates that he owned at one time.
